If you’re looking to upgrade your home security with a state-of-the-art video doorbell, the Ring Doorbell Pro 2 is an excellent choice. This wired model is designed to replace your existing doorbell and offers crisp video quality with a fish-eye camera lens for a wider field of view. In this guide, I’ll walk you through the entire installation process, sharing tips and tricks to get your Ring Doorbell Pro 2 up and running smoothly.
What’s Included in the Box?
The Ring Doorbell Pro 2 package comes with everything you’ll need for installation:
- Pro Power Kit:
This essential component is located behind the doorbell unit in the box and is used to connect to your existing doorbell chime system.
- Torque Screwdriver:
A specialized tool for tightening the security screws that keep your doorbell secure.
- Optional Corner Bracket:
This bracket is especially useful because the Ring Pro 2 has a fish-eye camera, and the bracket helps angle the camera for optimal viewing.
- Mounting Screws:
The standard screws included for installation, though I recommend considering sturdier screws if you have them on hand.
Compatibility and Power Requirements
The Ring Doorbell Pro 2 is a wired doorbell designed to replace your current doorbell system. However, keep in mind that it only works with doorbell transformers that output between 16 and 24 volts. If you’re unsure about your transformer, I’ve created a dedicated video explaining how to check compatibility.
Additionally, if you don’t want to wire it directly, there is an optional plug-in power supply available for purchase.
Step 1: Preparing Your Doorbell Chime
Before you begin any electrical work, safety first! Locate the breaker that powers your doorbell chime and turn it off to avoid any shocks or damage.
Next, find your doorbell chime and carefully remove its cover. You’ll see two terminals labeled front and trans. Loosen the screws on these terminals but keep the existing wires connected for now.
Step 2: Installing the Pro Power Kit
Take your Pro Power Kit and find a spot inside the chime box where you can tuck it away without blocking the bell’s function. I placed mine to the side to keep it out of the way.
Connect one wire from the Pro Power Kit to the trans terminal and the other wire to the front terminal. It doesn’t matter which wire goes to which terminal, just avoid connecting both wires to the same terminal.
Once connected, carefully reattach the doorbell chime cover.
Step 3: Removing the Ring Doorbell Faceplate and Wiring
To access the wiring terminals on your Ring Doorbell Pro 2, first remove the faceplate. Start by peeling off the plastic covering, then gently pull from the bottom to detach it.
On the back of the doorbell, you’ll find two terminal screws where you’ll connect your existing doorbell wires. If you don’t have existing wires, you may need to run new wiring, like I did from my crawl space.
Step 4: Mounting the Corner Bracket (Optional but Recommended)
The corner bracket helps angle the fish-eye camera for better coverage. Slide your doorbell wires through the center of the bracket before mounting it to your wall.
If you decide to use the included mounting screws, be cautious—they’re a bit on the flimsy side. I quickly stripped one of the screw heads and switched to more durable screws I had on hand, which worked perfectly.
Step 5: Connecting the Wires to the Doorbell
Trim your doorbell wire to about 8 to 10 inches—this length is sufficient for connecting to the terminals on the back of the Ring Doorbell Pro 2.
Loosen the two terminal screws on the back of the doorbell. To secure the wires, I recommend making a small loop on each wire that follows the direction you’ll be turning the screw. This helps the wire pull in tightly as you tighten the terminal screws.
Attach each wire to a terminal screw, then tighten securely.
Step 6: Mounting the Doorbell to the Bracket
Push any excess wire back into the wall or mounting area, then align your Ring Doorbell with the corner bracket. Use the two screws—one on top and one on the bottom—to secure the doorbell firmly in place.
Step 7: Powering Up and Final Setup
Turn your breaker back on to restore power to the doorbell circuit. If everything is connected correctly, your Ring Doorbell Pro 2 will play a short, pleasant tone to indicate it’s powered up.
Next, open the Ring app on your smartphone. The setup is straightforward: just scan the barcode on the side of your doorbell or use the ones included in the instruction manual. Follow the prompts to connect your device to your WiFi network.
Step 8: Securing the Faceplate
Once setup is complete, take one of the two security screws included in the box (you only need one) and reattach the doorbell’s faceplate. Use the torque screwdriver provided to tighten the screw at the bottom of the cover plate, ensuring your doorbell is secure.
